Shopping in York |
 |
 |
If you want to combine
shopping and sightseeing, York offers you that opportunity
with a wealth of independent and famous named shops
lining the city centre.
If you’re coming into the centre by car, it’s
best to use the park and ride facilities as there
is no free parking in York city centre and with York being
so busy at weekends, you’ll be lucky to find a parking
spot in one of the many central car parks.
If you’re looking for designer fashion pay a visit
to Swinegate [map].
Once a pig market and tucked away from the crowds Swinegate
is the perfect place to find fashion for men, women and
children. There’s also a range of restaurants and
café bars for the thirsty shopper.
Right in the middle of the centre is the perfect place
to grab a bargain. Newgate Market [map] is
open daily and sells a wide range of arts, crafts and
produce. Street entertainers are on hand to make you
giggle and part with your money.
Coppergate [map] is York’s newest shopping centre. Close to The
Jorvik Viking Centre [map], Coppergate has Marks &
Spencers, Clarks Shoes and other popular outlets.
There’s also The Japanese Shop, an
unusual store offering a range of oriental goodies that
can’t be found anywhere else outside of Asia.
Micklegate [map] is a Georgian Street with
many historic buildings that have been turned into shops
and restaurants.
If you’re looking for gifts or unusual home furnishings
a visit to Gillygate [map] is a must. Gillygate is lined on both sides by a variety
of exclusive design shops and York’s own Adze is based there where you can pick up a painting or sculpture
by both local and international artists.
If you want to escape the crowds do what the local citizens
do and check out one of the retail parks in the area. Monks Cross [map] is five minutes from the city centre and is one of York’s
most popular shopping centres. With an American mall vibe
the centre has a range of well-known shops including Miss
Selfridge, Boots and WH Smith.
Clifton Moor Retail Park [map] at Clifton Moor, York, is a little further away but has
a good range of shops including a large Asda and
a Vue Cinema close by.
McArthur Glen [map] is one of the largest shopping outlets in the region.
If you’re looking for a bargain, this is the place
to be. The range of discount shops is vast, from Levi to Ted Baker, this is the perfect place to pick
up a gift.
