Theatre In South West London |
 |
 |
Open up your mind to a new world with a visit to one
of South West London’s premier theatres.
As any theatre-lover will know there’s always
a cutting edge play on offer at the internationally
regarded Royal Court Theatre [map],
Sloane Square. This is where Edward Bond, Richard
Bean and the eponymous Joe Orton began their
careers and this is definitely the place for those who
want to be challenged, impassioned and inspired by some
of Britain’s finest playwriting talent.
The Richmond Theatre [map] was built in 1899
and is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture.
Located at The Green, Richmond, the theatre offers
an innovative and exciting programme of established
and new writing. This is where you’ll see famous
faces in some very unfamiliar roles. Recent examples
include Keith Waterhouse’s Billy Liar staring
The Royle Family’s Ralf Little and Just
Like That starring Jerome Flynn as Tommy
Cooper.
If that’s all a bit too heavy, head to The
Comedy Theatre [map],
Panton Street. Contrary to its name, this theatre doesn’t
just do belly laughs, there’s also a programme
of comedy-drama from the likes of Jim Cartwright and Willy Russell.
A range of professional and amateur companies show you
what they can do at the Battersea Arts Centre [map],
Lavender Hill. There’s also a number of other
activities happening here including adult learner courses
and opportunities for the kids to get involved in some
high-energy activities.
There’s a similar arts centre based at
Lavender Hill, Battersea.
The Brixton Shaw Theatre [map],
The Brix, Brixton Hill, is home to a highly regarded
cultural programme, offering theatre for everyone. Performances
here include new Shakespeare interpretations and work from one of Britain’s only Iranian
touring theatre companies.
Combine great theatre with a sociable night and some
great ale at one of South West London’s premier pub theatres.
The Finborough Arms [map] , Finborough Road, and the Whitebear Pub Theatre [map],
Kennington Park Road, offers this winning combination
plus some brand new writing talent.
