Sometimes it’s
nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy
London life and discover some real retail treasures
in the malls and streets of South East London.
For family-orientated bargains, head to The Catford
Shopping Centre [map],
Winslade Way, Catford. This impressive shopping mall has
a giant black and white cat suspended from the ceiling,
which makes more sense once you’ve investigated
Catford further and realised that it’s actually
a symbol used by traders and the council on a number of
buildings and shops. Catford also boasts an indoor
market and a number of Turkish bakeries. There’s
another mall not too far from Catford called The Lewisham
Centre, Molesworth Street, and this is the place for
famous name brands and independent retailers selling a
range of gifts and accessories.
The Aylesham Shopping Centre [map],
Rye Lane, is the place for high-street names, where you
can choose from favourites such as Boots and WH
Smith. Rye Lane is also a great place for purchasing shoes, designer clothes and suit and
formal hire.
Just because you don’t follow fashion or enjoy clothes
shopping doesn’t mean you have to be left at home
or in your hotel room, South East London offers some really
good markets for searching out unusual gifts and antiques. One of the most popular markets amongst
locals is Borough Market [map] situated between Borough
High Street, Bedale Street, Stoney Street and Winchester
Walk. This weekend only market serves food from across
the world and includes a great mix of traditional London
produce as well as exotically influenced fruit,
vegetables, and baked goods from across the globe. This
is the place for getting your organic and natural ingredients as well as being a must for a Christmas shopping visit.
Heading further southeast brings you to Croydon [map],
which has a good mix of affordable shopping streets and
malls.
Antique enthusiasts will find a wealth of unusual
shops and hidden treasures on Bermondsey Street [map]. A visit
to The Penny Farthing Arcade is a must in this
area and customers will discover a variety of unique shops
and plenty of opportunities, if you’re brave enough
to haggle for a bargain.
Treat yourself to some designer or bespoke jewellery at Gabriel’s Wharf [map],
Upper Ground. Choose from a range of top-name retailers
and independent jewellers who can make up your
requirements while you wait and guarantee a unique gift
for the one you love.
