Theatre In South East London |
 |
 |
If you’re looking for a venue to see some excellent
theatre, South East London wouldn’t immediately
spring to mind.
But unlike the expensive and crowded West End, you’ll
find a variety of drama productions appealing to a wide
range of tastes and a greater diversity than the typical
musical theatre offerings of Central London.
Start your theatre journey at the highly-acclaimed Warehouse Theatre [map], Dingwall Road, Croydon.
This theatre is at the forefront of developing new writing
and has taken many plays to The Royal Court [map] and Stratford-Upon-Avon. So get in there early and see
where it all begins with a visit to this venue located
in an old cement warehouse. Famous productions have
included premieres from the likes of Caryl Churchill,
Kevin Hood and Peter Moffat.
Head to Deptford for an evening of entertainment at The
Albany Theatre [map],
Douglas Way. The Albany is a multi-use performance and
digital art venue and benefits from a commitment to emerging
talent. Catch some of the very best new drama here which
aims to reflect a multi-cultural community, or enjoy some
razor sharp wit from some of Britain’s most popular
new comedians.
If you like to enjoy theatre in an intimate environment
you’ll be delighted to discover The Birds Nest
Theatre [map],
Deptford Church Street. This small venue is located above
a pub but still manages to pull in great crowds and some
top-name performers.
For modernist theatre with minimalist sets head to The
Southwark Playhouse [map],
a 90-seat studio located at Southwark Bridge Road. Just
a short distance from the famous Globe Theatre, the Playhouse
is an excellent example of how theatre has transformed
since Shakespeare’s day and you’ll be able
to enjoy a packed programme from some of the UK’s
most exciting and vibrant young writers.
One name that everybody who enjoys light entertainment
will be familiar with is Bob Hope [map],
and the theatre that bares his name lies on the Wythfield
Road, Eltham. See the best of amateur theatre at this
venue that has been established for more than 60 years.
Catch all the popular touring productions and familiar
faces at The Broadway Theatre [map],
Catford Broadway. This is a great venue to take the whole
family for musicals, tribute shows and television personality-led
productions, as well as a popular traditional annual pantomime.
For a simliar programme check out the Greenwich Theatre [map],
Crooms Hill, which has recently enjoyed a programme of
rejuvenation.
