Universities in Sheffield |

 |
With a combined
student total of more than 45,000, Sheffield’s universities
have a lot to offer anyone looking to further their education.
Both Sheffield Hallam [map] and the University of
Sheffield [map] are leading higher education establishments
with great reputations that help to attract the vast numbers
of students to the city.
Although its roots go back to the early 1800s, the University
of Sheffield was founded in 1905 when three higher education
establishments merged. Since its creation the university
has steadily grown to offer students from 116 countries courses from seven different faculties - Medicine,
Law, Architectural Studies, Engineering, Arts, Pure Science
and Social Sciences.
The university also boasts associations with six noble
prize winners since 1945 and can name some notable
British figures amongst their alumni including politician David Blunkett, comedian Eddie Izzard, film
director Stephen Daldry and astronaut Helen
Sharman.
Meanwhile in the south west of the city, Sheffield Hallam
is forging a reputation as an innovative and progressive UK university. It was one of the first polytechnics in
the country to become a university in 1992 and is now
counted as one of the best modern universities in the country.
Sheffield Hallam offers more than 650 courses across
its ten ‘schools’ that include Business and
Finance, Computing and Management Sciences, Education,
and Sport and Leisure Management. It also has excellent
research facilities and a comprehensive e-learning
program.
Although these universities come from different academic
backgrounds, students at these institutions intermingle
regularly at the many student-oriented attractions. There’s
also an annual varsity event where the two universities
compete in around 30 different sports.
The other notable further education establishment in the
city is Sheffield College [map]. Combining three independent
colleges across the city, the college has become one of Europe’s largest further education colleges.
