Shopping in Sheffield |
 |
 |
As the UK’s
fourth largest city Sheffield has plenty to offer residents
and visitors, and if it’s shopping that you want
this city is sure to satisfy. Whether you stay in the
city centre or venture further afield there are plenty
of opportunities for you to relieve yourself of your cash.
Shopping in Sheffield city centre will provide you with
a great mix of department stores and high street regulars,
as well as some alternative purchasing options. The main
shopping areas around Fargate [map] and The Moor [map] are pedestrianised so you don’t need to worry about
traffic as you dive from shop to shop. As a rough guide
head to Fargate if you have a passion for fashion and to The Moor if you have a variety of shopping needs,
as this is where you’ll find department stores and discount shops. However, Fargate also has some
specialist markets if you’re looking for something
a little… well special.
Just off Fargate you’ll find rich pickings in Orchard
Square [map].
This is an award-winning part of the city that
brings together popular UK stores with independent outlets.
If you’re unsure whether you’re in the right
place, just keep an eye out for the square’s animated
clock.
For a refreshing change from the norm check out what’s
on Ecclesall Road [map].
Located to the south of the city centre, you’ll
find distinctive shops that sell furnishings for your
home, your body and your friends. There are also some
antique shops here, however Sheffield does have its own
dedicated Antiques Quarter [map] along Abbeydale Road if you are looking for something
in particular. While for more contemporary items for your
home you could try West Street [map].
For shopping chic in the heart of the city head to the Devonshire Quarter [map], close to the City Hall to the
west of the centre. As well as a vibrant mix of independent
stores that sell everything from fledging designer fashions
to retro records, you’ll also find trendy café
bars in this, the coolest part of town. Here, you’ll
also find The Forum [map], a converted warehouse
that is home to the arty and the offbeat.
Of course, if you’re visiting Sheffield and want
to take a souvenir of the city home with you then why
not opt for some Sheffield steel. The area is synonymous
with steel as Sheffield was once the world’s largest
producer of steel. There are several shops in the town
centre where you can buy knives, cutlery or other steel
items to give as gifts or take home as memories of your
time in Sheffield, including Don Alexander [map] on Ecclesall
Road, Osbourne Silversmiths [map] on Solly
Street, Rivelin Cutlery [map] on Holme Lane
and Sheffield Scene [map] on Surrey Street.
If you prefer to purchase under the roof of a shopping
centre then Sheffield has one of the best in the UK. Meadowhall [map] has nearly 300 shops in one convenient location that’s
easy to get to from the city centre by car or using the
city’s public transport. A smaller version can be
found at Crystal Peaks Centre [map],
which has plenty of shops and a 10-screen cinema.
