Kids & Families in Sheffield |

If you’re
planning a day out in Sheffield, something all the family
will enjoy, then finding activities to keep the kids entertained
is a must.
Sheffield has a number of attractions and distractions,
which kids should find exciting and informative, and that
may teach you a thing or two in the process.
Playing sport is a great way for kids to make new friends
and there are plenty of opportunities in and around Sheffield.
At SheffieldIce [map] kids can try and get to grips with the ice at one of the
many ice skating activities. Skiing is another option
at Sheffield’s Ski Village [map],
which has skiing and snowboarding opportunities for kids
of all abilities. For more sporting
ideas take a look at our entertainment
section.
If your kids love to play the fool, they may enjoy adding
some new skills to their repertoire. For young clowns
there’s the Greentop Community Circus [map] where kids can learn juggling, unicycling and more,
while for young thespians there’s the Crucible
Youth Theatre [map] and amateur dramatics at The Lantern Theatre [map] and the Merlin Theatre [map] in Nether Edge.
Top of the list for kids aged 12 year-old and under is
likely to be the Just For Kids [map] indoor
adventure playground. This is the largest centre of its
kind in the north and has plenty to keep the fun rolling,
with a massive climbing frame, slides, ropes and an assault
course for older kids with a low-level soft play area
for babies and toddlers.
Alternatively there’s Sheffield’s largest
soft play attraction, Alphabet Zoo [map].
Here you’ll find swing bridges, scramble nets, bouncy
castles and more for kids to play the day away. If you
need somewhere where you can relax while your youngsters
work off some of that youthful energy, this place could
be ideal.
If your kids would rather check out some animal magic
than monkey around, there are plenty of options in and
around the city centre.
For free farming fun why not try Heeley City Farm [map], located in the centre of Sheffield. Here you
can see rare and usual breeds, meet Molly the Irish moiled
cow with her calf, Moonlight, see demonstrations of wind
and solar power or enjoy the aroma of the herb gardens,
all in one fun packed day out.
You could also try Graves Park Animal Farm [map],
where kids can get up close to all sorts of farmyard favourites
including donkeys, pigs and rabbits. The farm is actually
next to Sheffield’s largest park, so you
could enjoy a whole day of outdoor fun with a picnic in
the park, playing games and exploring the bird and sculpture
trail there.
Meanwhile for indoor family fun, museums are always an
interesting choice.
Attempting, and succeeding, at bringing Sheffield’s
industrial history to life in a way that is engaging for
kids as well as adults is the Kelham Island Museum [map].
Standing on a man-made island in the historic part of
Sheffield, this museum contains some fascinating artefacts
including, a record-breaking Grand Slam Bomb and
the Sheffield-made Penny Farthing bicycle.
For a different kind of fascinating day out, there’s Magna [map] in Rotherham, where forces provide the fun. This hands-on
exploration of the world around us uncovers the power
of water, fire, earth and air and how they impact on our
lives.
Venturing away from Sheffield and out into Derbyshire
you’ll find The American Adventure [map] theme park. As well as all the thrilling rides there are
opportunities for education as well, but ultimately you’ll
be here for the rides. Alternatively there’s Gulliver’s
World with more than 30 rides for kids aged two to
13.
If you fancy going underground there are a number of caves
and caverns to explore in the Peak District. There’s Speedwell Cavern [map] in Castleton, an historic cave where visitors go underground
to see the world famous bottomless pit. There’s
also Peak Cavern [map],
also known as ‘The Devil’s Arse’ [map],
a spectacular limestone cavern that has been inhabited
for the past 300 years, and the world famous Blue John
Cavern where you can see Blue John stone amidst the
stalactites and stalagmites.
