When you’re looking for somewhere to go that’s
not a museum or an art gallery but want somewhere that
will still be of interest, you have a number of options
in Sheffield. Making the most of the fact that Sheffield is the greenest city in England is one way to while away an afternoon. If the weather is fine you can take a stroll around the Botanical Gardens [map] and if the weather is not so fine then you can try Sheffield’s Winter Gardens [map] instead. Another option for green-fingered types is Heeley City Farm [map], where you can wander round the demonstration gardens and learn about recycling and renewable energy sources. You’ll also find some unusual domestic animals at the farm so you can enjoy the delights of a range of living things here. For a real afternoon delight wildlife lovers can venture to the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre [map]. Here you’ll find exotic butterflies and birds as well as creepy crawlies, monkeys, skunks and much more. If you’d rather find ways to bring the past to life, then why not spend an hour or two at Bishop’s House [map], Sheffield’s oldest surviving half-timber house. The house has been preserved to give visitors a real feel of what life was like during Tudor and Stuart times, with exhibits that tell the story of how people lived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Other ways to peak into past include taking a trip to the historic Beauchief Abbey [map], where 12th century Sheffield is explored, and Shepherd Wheel [map], which helped the area gain its reputation for quality cutlery. If you’re willing to venture a little further afield there’s history, fine art and agricultural beauty in and around the grounds of Cannon Hall [map], and in Doncaster the fascinating Earth Centre [map] has a number of indoor and outdoor exhibitions that will give people of all ages food for thought.
