As the home of a diverse range of music acts that includes
Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, Moloko and Pulp frontman Jarvis
Cocker, you would expect the city to have an equally diverse
range of venues…and Sheffield does not disappoint. Top pop and rock acts that are, or used to be, regular fixtures in international music charts can be regularly seen at the Hallam FM Arena [map]. Formerly known simply as the Sheffield Arena, this world-class venue has hosted some of the biggest names in music including REM, Elton John and Lionel Ritchie since it open in 1991. Tickets can be purchased online from the Hallam FM website or over the phone on 0114 256 56 56. With a maximum capacity of 50,000, Sheffield’s other major venue is the Don Valley Stadium [map]. It boasts a varied programme of events, including concerts so it’s definitely worth checking out who’s playing at this venue. Opened in the autumn of 1980, the Leadmill [map] is the venue that bridges the gap between headline acts on tour, and up-and-coming talent. This venue regularly appears on “top ten live music venues” lists by the NME and other industry magazines and has an impressive history of acts that includes, Primal Scream, Faith No More, Manic Street Preachers, Paul Weller, Moby, Miss Dynamite and Coldplay, to truly name only a few. Both Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield also have live music on offer. For live music The Foundry [map] is probably where you’ll find your favourite band, but you may also catch some new music at other university venues as well. Most events are during term time but most concerts are open to the public. The Boardwalk [map] is one of the music venues in Sheffield where you can go to see what talent is making its way through the music ranks. The venue as been a home for live music for the past 50 years and has helped to launch the careers of several acts. The venue has an inclusive outlook on the style of music it supports and during any one week you could experience anything from country and folk music to thrash and nu metal. There are also regular acoustic sessions as well as performances by local talent. There’s something different on every night of the week here, so when you fancy an injection of live music, this is an ideal venue.
