Gay Bars in Sheffield |
 |
 |
Unlike many cities
with a gay scene, Sheffield does not have a gay pocket
where all the gay venues are located, so you’ll
probably need a good sense of direction if you want to
take it all in.
Up until recently Sheffield only had a couple of dedicated
gay venues but the shining beacon was Dempsey’s
Bar [map] located right in the city centre. Open until 2am every
day, this cocktail serving venue certainly knows how to
keep punters happy with music every night, and Mai Tais
on the menu. Dempsey's is still the most popular venue
on the Sheffield gay scene and you should find drinking
here a fun and friendly experience.
The bar downstairs is open during the day and in the evening
this is where the karaoke and quizzes take place.
However to get into the club upstairs you will need to
be a member if you don’t want to be handing over
a note or two at the door.
For more drinking in a fun atmosphere Ma Bakers [map] is worth a try. Pitching themselves as the “cheapest
gay venue in Sheffield” in terms of drinks,
this is a great venue to get in the mood for a night out.
Opened in July 2003 at its Carlisle Street location this
bar is run by gay people for gay people and they
promise plenty of theme nights as well as male and female
strippers.
You may also find strippers to accompany your drink at
the Matilda Tavern [map]. This traditional venue dates
back to 1825 but has only recently been refurbished and
revamped as a gay venue. Here you’ll find all the
ingredients to paint the town pink.
Club Xes [map], has been going for years and is a big
draw for post-drink clubbing. Although it is a firm fixture
in the gay scene it does have nights to accommodate a
wide range of people with transvestite and fetish nights
often making an appearance on the billing. Club Xes is
open every night of the week and can be found on Carlise
Street.
As well as gay bars there are also several gay club nights
you could try. Climax is the long established gay
night at the Sheffield University Student Union [map],
but you’ll also find Pink Glove there every
month, as well as alt. the only gay alternative
music night in the city. There’s also Pink at
Orchis [map] on Caver Street on Tuesdays and the fabulous Fairy Likuid, which is being held at Aqua, near
Ponds Forge, while the City Hall is being refurbished.
