As the city
where the first football rulebook was produced
in 1857 and home to the oldest football club in the
world and one of the oldest stadiums, football is
deeply rooted in the city of Sheffield. The two teams Sheffield is noted for are Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. Although these two sides have a strong rivalry, they do have a number of things in common, including a nickname, their yo-yo positioning in the Football League and their early roots in cricket. Looking at their form over the years neither club can really claim to be the better side (although fans’ opinions will certainly differ), both have won the FA Cup a number of times, both have played in the top division of the Football League and both have had their fair share of disappointments, and this is probably what helps to keep the rivalry alive. However neither of these clubs can lay claim to being the oldest side in the world - this honour goes to Sheffield Football Club. Formed in 1857 by two army officers, the club is still a part of the Football Association playing their games in the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division. Not long ago Sheffield FC teamed up with a local ladies club to form a Sheffield FC ladies team, who played their first season in 03/04; quite an achievement for a club who didn't even allow women to attend their Annual Dinner until relatively recently. Other options for women looking to get involved with the beautiful game include Mosborough Ladies F.C, who play in the East Riding Women’s League and train at Westfield Sports Centre on Wednesdays from 6.30pm. There’s also Steel City Wanderers FC, the largest independent ladies team in South Yorkshire. They train at Hillsborough Park every Monday and Wednesday from 6:00pm. Sheffield Wednesday also have a ladies team, well seven in fact, that cater for various age groups. Sheffield also has the Blades Super Draw Sunday Sports League, which has given adults who want to play competitive football an outlet since 1969. Mainly sponsored by Sheffield United FC, the league currently has 35 teams competing across three divisions. Juniors also have a place in Sheffield’s football landscape with the Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League. Teams play in age group divisions from under 7s through to under 16s for league and cup glory. |
