| Sheffield
is one of the largest cities in the UK and as such has
attracted people from all over the world to live and work
there, people who have also brought their culinary cultures
with them. So if you want to travel the world without
paying for the flights, there are a number of restaurants
in Sheffield where you can do it with your tastebuds.
Las Iguanas [map] is a breath of fresh air when it comes to food in Sheffield.
Located in the trendy part of town on Fitzwilliam Street
this venue should put you well on your way with your culinary
travels with dishes from Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela and
Chile. Moquecas, Enchiladas and Paella all feature on
the menu with a special kids' menu for those who
are a little more than just young at heart. This is the
place to enjoy your meal if you like cocktails and a vibrant
spirit that is conjured by the Latin American flair.
Also offering an eclectic menu that covers Italian, Spanish
and South American dishes is Julio's [map].
Although this restaurant is a little far from the town
centre in the suburb of Oughtibridge, if you’re
looking for some variety then it may be worth the trip.
If Chinese food has become second nature to you, it may
be worth trying flavours from elsewhere in the Orient.
Also slightly out of town but probably worth the journey
is the Royal Elephant Thai Restaurant [map].
Here your journey will be rewarded by authentic flavours
that are not only a delight for the taste buds but a joy
for all your senses.
If you would like your tastebuds to venture to sunnier
climbs then you shouldn’t go too far wrong by sampling
the tastes of the Caribbean. There are two options in
the area for you to choose from, the first is The Mango
Tree [map] on London Road, a restaurant with a great atmosphere and
some classic Caribbean flavours, and there’s UK
Mama [map],
a restaurant that’s more Kenya than Jamaica but
still has coconut and spicy dishes on the menu.
Turkish restaurants are not really commonplace in the
north of England, however Sheffield does have one to its
name. Located on London Road, Efes [map] is
the place to get your fix of Turkey’s culinary culture.
Sample typical flavours like pilaki, kebabs and borek
(deep-fried cheese pastries).
If Greek flavours are more your thing then there’s
only one option in Sheffield, The Mad Greek [map]. As the name suggests the atmosphere is certainly
lively and the food has had mixed responses, but if you
want Greek food and don’t fancy cooking it yourself,
then this place could be worth a try.
