Dance in Sheffield |
 |
 |
Dance in Sheffield comes in a variety of forms, from the
professional grace of touring dance companies to the fun
of dance lessons; there are plenty of ways to get involved.
If the thought of actually getting physical fills you,
and those around you, with dread then it may be best to
simply sit back and enjoy a professional dance performance.
The Lyceum Theatre [map] is one of the two main
venues in the city for dance. The varied programme here
offers everything from ballet to contemporary dance and has seen some of the best touring dance productions
grace the stage. Keep an eye on the programme for the
season for specific dance performances.
Sheffield City Hall [map] is the other main venue for dance in the city. Amidst
its varied programme of drama and concerts the venue also
hosts a number of dance productions throughout the year.
Currently Sheffield City Hall is undergoing a £12.5
million refurbishment, but when it is completed in autumn
2005 it will resume its roll as a dance performance host.
The city is also home to its own professional dance company, Vincent Dance Theatre [map].
Based in Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter,
this company aims to challenge values and address issues
through dance. Their performances are often intense and
full of emotion but are widely praised for their
imaginative approach. Vincent Dance Theatre regularly
tour all over the country and also run dance workshops
for the local community.
If you consider yourself to be a bit of a mover and shaker
who just needs a little direction, then as well as attending
a Vincent Dance Theatre workshop or two, you could also
take part in dance lessons.
There are a number of dance schools in Sheffield
including Rhythm
Dance Studios and City Limits [map] who specialise in Latin and Ballroom and Drapers
Dance Centre [map] for dance classes or
private lessons.
