Whether you are in the city for business or pleasure, you’ll find that getting from A to B in Sheffield, shouldn’t add to your stress levels. Of course the cheapest way to get around the city is on foot, and you’ll find much of what Sheffield has to offer can be got to by walking. However Sheffield is quite hilly so make sure you’ve got comfortable shoes if you plan to take in all the sights. If however you would rather save your breath and make use of the local public transport, you’ll find it a convenient and straightforward option. In 1995 Sheffield became one of the few English cities to have a Supertram system. The routes connect the railway station and city centre to locations further afield such as the universities and Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Trams run regularly throughout the day with the last trams of the day leave from the terminus at around 11.30pm. Sheffield also has an extensive bus network that will take you to the outer reaches of South Yorkshire as well as across the city centre. Most local buses stop somewhere on the High Street, so this will be your best bet if you need to catch a bus. Many bus stops will have the bus route on them to help you figure about where you are going, however if you get stuck you can wander down to the Travel Information Centre [map] at the Interchange, which is open until 5:30pm on weekdays and 5:00pm on weekends, for further assistance. If you're planning plenty of public transport travel then it may be worth buying an all day ticket. These can be bought for individual modes of transport, for example a FirstDay ticket for the buses, or one that gives you unlimited travel on a variety of public transport for a limited period. Taxis are another transport option, however they are significantly more expensive than taking public transport. There are two different types of taxi in Sheffield, the traditional black cab (although they are not always black) which can be hailed in the street or picked up from one of the taxi ranks at the train station and Barkers Pool in the city centre. The other option is to phone for a private hire taxi but be sure to check that the car you get into is a genuine taxi. Selected taxi companies in the city centre area:
If you’d rather drive yourself, then as with any big city you should take into account congestion, particularly during peak times. However if you are willing to compromise then using the city’s park and ride system is a good option as you can drive to within easy reach of the city, but avoid the congestion by using public transport to get into the city centre.
