Although Sheffield does have its own airport, at the moment it does not run any scheduled flights. However there are plans to rename the airport the “Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport” and run scheduled flights from there in 2005.

So to get airborne to or from Sheffield you will need to go to Manchester Airport [map] or Leeds Bradford Airport [map]. Both are with in an hour’s drive from Sheffield city centre (traffic permitting) and can be accessed by public transport with Sheffield having a direct train connection with Manchester.

Several major airlines fly from Manchester, so if you are planning on going to far flung destinations, Manchester Airport is probably your best bet. However for budget flights to destinations across the UK and Europe, Leeds Bradford Airport should be first on your list.

London airports may also be an option as there is a direct train from Sheffield to central London, from there you can get to Gatwick and Heathrow. If you are planning this air travel option you should allow at around four hours to get to and from Sheffield.
