Shopping in Plymouth |
 |
 |
Plymouth is reputedly
the busiest shopping location in the South West, and with
hundreds of different shops to choose from, it’s
easy to see why.
Whether you’re after a new outfit, the weekly groceries
or fragranced bath salts, there’s a store in this
city to meet your needs!
The main shopping area is located around four streets, Old Town Street [map], New George Street [map] and Cornwall Street [map],
where you’ll find high street names, and Mayflower
Street [map],
where you’ll see an array of independent stores.
Plymouth is home to three large department stores, Dingles (part of the House of Fraser chain) and Debenhams
[map],
which are both on Royal Parade and Derry's [map],
near the Theatre Royal on Derry’s Cross.
Most of the best known high street shops can be in Plymouth,
including Marks & Spencer, Boots, The Bodyshop, Argos,
Virgin Megastore, HMV, Woolworths, BHS, Mothercare, River
Island, Next and Toys R Us. There is also a Sainsbury’s
and a Tesco in the city centre.
If you take a walk through the Barbican's cobbled streets
[map],
you’ll find an array of cool gift and souvenir
shops, where you can pick up a memento from which
to remember your visit by.
Those of you looking for something a little different
may want to head to the Barbican Pannier Market [map],
which is situated just off New George Street. This place
is open Monday to Saturday and has more than 100 stalls,
a fish market and numerous cafés.
For shoppers who decide to take their car into the city
centre, there are plenty of car parks located around
the shopping area, however the park and ride schemes do provide a convenient alternative.
Although there is no indoor shopping centre at the moment,
plans are underway for a major new development, which
will include a mall with high street names and plenty
of entertainment venues.
