Guide to Oxford |

 |
A visit to Oxford
guarantees a journey into the past. Everywhere you turn
you’ll find historic monuments and museums reminding
you how important Oxford has been in shaping England.
There are certain venues such as the Ashmolean Museum [map] ,
Britain’s first public museum, that are always
extremely popular with visitors, as is the University
Museum [map] that houses dozens of natural history collections.
Then there’s Oxford University [map] itself with
its architecturally-stunning buildings including Christ
Church College [map] and Magdalen College [map].
There’s a very distinctive creative streak running
through the city, and its passion for future thinking
has led to the creation of the Museum of Modern Art [map], which was established in 1966 to get away
from the culture of stuffy old galleries. This gallery
is all about fun and unpretentious education.
Theatre-goers will find
plenty of great venues where students and stars of the
future regularly perform, as well as grand dukes and
dames.
The band Radiohead played their first gigs in
some of the city’s most famous music
venues and you’ll find plenty of places to
rock out or relax in including the Zodiac [map] on
Cowley Road.
Clubbers will be spoilt for choice with great nights
out from the likes of PoNaNa [map] and the Zodiac [map],
which plays host to an award-winning student night.
Comedy is covered by the
mighty Jongleurs [map] on Hythe Bridge Street and you’ll
also find some smaller venues dotted around the city
where you can have a relaxing pint and listen to a promising
new stand-up.
