If you’re
planning a romantic city break don’t rule out Nottingham
because this place is packed with luxury hotels, fine
restaurants and dark corners, which are perfect for love-struck
couples. To set the mood you’ll first have to find a top class hotel with all the little extras that should help to put you and your loved one in the mood for some serious romance. So how about checking into the Hilton Nottingham [map], which is part of the world famous hotel chain and has a range of great facilities, including a restaurant, health club and swimming pool. Alternatively you could try the Nottingham Royal Moathouse [map] on Wollaton Street, which even has Crown Executive rooms for that extra special occasion. The facilities here include a bar, two restaurants and a leisure club, which has a nail salon, beauty treatment rooms, sunbed, sauna, swimming pool and gym. Once you’ve made yourself at home in your hotel room, why not head out into the historic city centre and see some of the sights. If you’re hoping to sneak a few kisses in the dark why not head down to the 600-year-old caves, which run underneath the city’s streets. Accessed through the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, the City of Caves exhibition [map] gives you the chance to explore part of the cave system, with highlights including an air-raid shelter and a replica Victorian slum dwelling. Back in the 1700s Nottingham was famous for its lace so why not visit the Lace Centre [map] on Castle Road, a medieval building where you can see and buy lace. The Lace Market Centre [map] on High Pavement is also worth seeing as it has a visitors centre with shop and café. For the chance to be Robin Hood and Maid Marian for the day head out of the city to Sherwood Forest Country Park [map], where you’ll find the historic Major Oak and a visitors' centre depicting how Robin and Marian would have lived. Another attraction that is certain to put you in the mood for love is the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery [map], located in a fairytale-style building. Among the displays here are some of Nottingham’s medieval alabaster carvings for which the town became famous way back when, along with temporary art exhibitions and some great permanent works by Lowry, Delacroix and Rosetti. As the evening begins to draw in you’ll want to head off somewhere special for a romantic dinner for two. Well, you’re in luck because Nottingham has a number of swanky restaurants to choose from. For starters there’s Hart's [map] on Park Row, which is highly recommended in the AA Best Restaurants guide for its high quality cuisine and spectacular surroundings. Alternatively, seafood dishes always seem to add a little love to the air, so you could try Aquarium [map] on Goosegate in Hockley, or Loch Fyne [map] on King Street, which specialises in shellfish including the famous Loch Fyne oysters. Once you’ve finished your slap-up meal you’ll want to finish the night in style, so why not pay a visit to one of Nottingham magnificent theatres, such as the Theatre Royal [map], where you can catch a West End musical or the Royal Concert Hall [map], where you can see a leading orchestra in action.
