Home to the oldest
pub in England and some the UK’s trendiest
21st century bars, it’s no wonder partygoers
from all over the country descend on Nottingham every
weekend. The best places to be seen include the classy Lace Market area and the buzzing bars along the canal. Read on for some suggestions for where to go for a top night's drinking in Nottingham. First of all we’ll head to the Lace Market district, which is packed to bursting with swanky café-bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Bluu Bar [map] on Broadway, is one of the newest bars on the block but has already won a large crowd of regulars, thanks to its great live music, good food menu and friendly atmosphere. Situated on nearby High Pavement, Brass Monkey [map] is a small independent bar with a minimalist and sleek design. Along with wooden flooring, comfy seating and an indoor style terrace, there is a lavish cocktail bar with a great menu. Also in the Lace Market area you’ll find the Pitcher and Piano [map] on High Pavement, which is perhaps one of the boldest church conversions in the land. It is popular for food during the day and as a pre-club drinking venue. If you’re looking for a place where you’ll find utterly trendy clientele, head to the new Fashion [map] bar on Middle Pavement, where supermodels Naomi, Kate and Cindy adorn the walls. This place acts as a restaurant from Monday to Thursday, while at the weekend it turns into a late licence cocktail bar with all the trimmings. For more upmarket bars head to Canal Street, where you’ll find the recently redeveloped canal-side awash with plush bars and eateries. Among them is Bar Risa [map], which is housed in the old British Waterways warehouse alongside Jongleurs comedy club. This spacious establishment is spread over two floors and has plenty of seating inside for the massive weekend crowd as well more tables outside by the canal. There are two bars, which regularly play host to drinks promotions, while the top DJs play a good mix of garage and R‘n’B. Not far from here is the hugely popular Via Fossa [map], which is one of the places to be seen in Nottingham as it has plush interior along with plenty of tables along the canal for those buzzing summer nights. There are plenty more bars in the city centre, including The Square [map] on The Poultry, which provides a base for the fashionable, mainstream crowd, and The Social [map] on Pelham Street, which is a branch of London's Heavenly Social and just as cool. If you’re looking for a drink of traditional ale then where better than Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem [map], the oldest pub in England. Situated on Castle Road and dating back to 1189, this establishment is said to be where soldiers gathered before heading off for the Crusades. These days it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nottingham and is a great place to grab a bite to eat at lunchtime or enjoy a decent pint in the evening. Heading out of the city centre there are a few other good bars worth checking out, such as Indigo [map] on Carlton Street in Hockley, where you’ll find the young and fashion conscious, and Moog [map] on Newdigate Street in Radford, which is a cocktail bar and restaurant rolled into one.
