Both events celebrate
the life and times of the boldest outlaw that ever lived
and offer plenty to do for young and old alike. The Robin Hood Festival, which takes place in Sherwood Forest and lasts for a whole week, starts each year at the beginning of August. At the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre [map] there are various entertainers delighting the crowd, alongside a plethora of medieval stalls – here you can see coins being made, goblets being moulded and hog being roasted on a spit. At an open air theatre, children are invited to take to the stage and act out the tales of Robin Hood. At the Major Oak you can watch re-enactments of the battles between good and evil, see how the foresters used to live, or perhaps try your hand at archery. Alternatively, you can just wander round the forest and casually bump into various characters from the Robin Hood fables. Other highlights include a jousting tournament where the knights show off their skills and a festive feast, whereyou will be entertained by jugglers, jesters and minstrels while feasting on a roast hog. The Robin Hood Pageant sees the grounds of Nottingham Castle [map] transformed into a medieval village for one weekend every year. Historical re-enactments bring the past to life and all your favourite characters will be there to join in the fun, from Friar Tuck to the fair Maid Marian. Craftspeople demonstrate skills that have passed down through the centuries – wood turning, shoe making and coin striking to name a few. Jugglers, jesters and medieval puppeteers are on hand to entertain the youngsters. You can learn to fire a bow and arrow like Nottinghamshire’s most famous legend, and you can marvel at the Nottingham Jousting Association in action. But will Robin Hood himself put in an appearance? You will have to go along and find that out for yourself! |
