Norwich is home
to the University of East Anglia (UEA) [map],
an institution dedicated to providing a new and unique
university education. Add to this the city’s wealth of bars, nightclubs and cultural attractions, and you’ll soon see why more than 13,000 students choose to study at the UEA every year. The university was officially founded in 1964, although the first undergraduates enrolled a year earlier to study English Studies and Biological Sciences. Since then the establishment has witnessed many firsts, including the combining of related subjects to give students more flexibility – a practice now undertaken in most UK universities. Another major achievement that has helped the UEA stick to its motto of ‘Do Different’ is the recent introduction of a modular, semester system, which offers students yet more choice to learn a wider variety of subjects. The university is based at Earlham, a former municipal golf course located just two and a half miles from central Norwich and 15 miles from Norfolk Broads. It was designed by architect Denys Lasdun, who also created the National Theatre, to reflect and complement its academic aim to be different. Among the finest creations here are the monumental Teaching Wall, the raised walkways and Central Square. It’s also a feat that no building on campus is more than a five-minute walk from another. UEA offers a wide range of courses, including medicine, economics, law, sociology, nursing and midwifery, speech and language therapy, and American studies, making it one of the top universities in the UK.
