Take a step back in time and discover what has made Norwich
the city it is today by visiting one of the many museums
it has to offer. And where better to start than at the historic Norwich Castle [map] on Castle Meadow, which was first started by William the Conqueror and is now home to the city’s principal museum and art gallery. Here you’ll find a number of exhibitions including an archaeology gallery celebrating Queen Boudica, displays dedicated to life in East Anglia after the collapse of the Roman Empire, and an Egyptian collection. In addition to all this the castle also houses the world’s largest teapot collection and has some magnificent landscapes by 19th century Norwich painters. Another of Norwich’s most popular museums is Strangers’ Hall [map] on Charing Cross, which as been open to the public since the early 1900s. Once home to the mayors and sheriffs of Norwich, the museum now has one of largest domestic life collections in the UK, with everything from jelly moulds and vacuum cleaners on display. For collections representing East Anglian craft and industry over the ages head to the Bridewell Museum [map] on Bridewell Alley, a medieval merchant’s house that was once a prison. Also worth a look is the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum [map] at Shirehall, where you follow the story of Norfolk’s soldiers over three centuries of global conflict, while the City of Norwich Aviation Museum [map] on the outskirts of the city has aircraft and memorabilia on display, including a huge Vulcan bomber. If you’re looking for a museum with a difference then why not pay a visit to the unique Colman’s Mustard Shop and Museum [map] on Bridewell Alley, which traces the 200-year history of this popular delicacy. Finally, Origins [map] is a multi-million pound heritage centre located in the magnificent glass Forum on Millennium Plain, which explores Norwich’s 2,000-year history.
