Libraries in the
north west of London are a fantastic resource for information
and education on a wide variety of topics. The epitome of this would be the British Library [map]. Every publication produced in the UK and Ireland has a place in this vast library including books, periodicals and newspapers. The latest incarnation of the British Library was completed in 1997 and houses 14 separate floors crammed with information including special collections of maps and music as well as literary and historical information from a range of geographical areas such as Ireland and Eastern Europe. However the British Library has a dual role as library and museum and as such has a number of exhibits on show all year round. Some of the items on display include the Diamond Sutra, the earliest dated printed book and a Leonardo Da Vinci dating from around the 15th century. The Wellcome Library [map] is another special collection which has a home in north west London. Information stored at this Euston Road venue has a focus on medicine, its past, its present and its social context. The library is free to use however identification will need to be provided on your first visit. In addition to these feature libraries the north west also over 20 local libraries for the public to use for reference and lending purposes. These libraries will have a less comprehensive range of information however most topics will be covered to some degree. Camden Central Library [map] in Swiss Cottage, which has some material in Urdu, French Somali and German and Golders Green Library, which has a Hebrew special collection, are two of the bigger libraries in the area that offer reference facilities and information as well as lending.
