Bars in North London |
 |
 |
The experience
of drinking in north London can be whatever you want
it to be - a casual afternoon at the pub or a trendy
night out sipping Cosmopolitans… the choice is
yours.
The Social [map] (N1) at Arlington Square is where you can spend those
lazy afternoons enjoying a pint and some good food.
The wood panelling and red velour give this pub a distinctly
local feel but when the weekend comes this venue is
transformed into one of the area’s top DJ bars
- perfect for that weekend vibe.
However, the Embassy [map] in Islington also vies for the title of best DJ bar
in north London, giving the feel of a club without the
entrance fee. This bar had a former life as a working
men’s club but today it’s right up there
on Islington’s cool list – and it’s
the music, the DJs and the funk soul brothers and sisters
that have given the Embassy its worthy reputation.
Meanwhile in Kings Cross, jazz and hip hop music plays
as drinkers bask in the red glow at the Ruby Lounge
[map] . Truly a place for trendy young things, patrons
can dance, look at the fabulous chandelier or simply
watch the world go past the huge windows.
For drinking into the wee hours the Medicine Bar [map] should be on your list. The décor is as modern
as you would expect from an Islington bar but it’s
the cocktails and the music on a funk/house/soul vibe
that people usually queue up for.
Islington is also home to The Retreat [map],
a welcome alternative to the many average pubs and bars
on Upper Street. This is one of the most chic venues
in the area and is a great place to enjoy a drink for
business or pleasure.
When it comes to laid back cool The Elbow Room [map] is definitely a good bet. It’s surely London’s
trendiest chain of pool halls and north London has one
in Angel. However the low lighting, purple ambience
and live DJs make this a stylish hangout even if you
aren’t cued up.
For something slightly different you could try the Duke
of Cambridge [map],
London’s first organic pub. Does organic mean
non-alcoholic? Hell no! You’ll find organic beer,
wine and spirits all available over the bar. Are organic
pubs full of hippies talking politics? Well yeah, but
no, you’ll just have to try it and find out!
