GO Universities in Newcastle

Universities in Newcastle Upon Tyne Almost one seventh of Newcastle’s population are students, who have flocked to the city to take advantage of all that Newcastle has to offer those with a desire for a degree.

The city is home to two centres of higher education, the University of Newcastle [map], which is exclusively based in Newcastle, and Northumberland University [map], which has two campuses in the city and another close by.

The University of Newcastle is the older of the two, and can trace its origins back to 1834. Back then it was a School of Medicine and Surgery but today it’s an institution with a reputation for a diverse range of quality courses as well as a respected centre for research. In fact in 2001, the Sunday Times voted it as ‘University of the Year’.

Students here have a choice of over 240 programmes of study covering subjects such as Civil Engineering, Architecture, Dentistry, Languages and Marine Sciences amongst others.

And because this compact campus is located close to the city centre, students here are never too far away from the Bigg Market action and Quayside nightlife.

Meanwhile students at the Northumbria University can count themselves as part of one of the largest metropolitan universities in the country. The university boasts more than 23,500 students in a range of full and part time courses based at one of their three campuses.

Northumbria University has its heart in the city where it has two campuses, the administrative centre, the main library and Student Union. In addition to these the Longhirst Campus, is just 15 miles north of the city.

Because this university is so large, students have over 500 courses to participate in, from midwifery to sports management to Dance-Choreography and a whole host of others besides. As well as undergraduates, they also cater for postgraduates and those wishing to boost their skills with a short course. Despite the wide range of courses available, the university league tables regularly place this university among the best.

Newcastle is in fact somewhat of a student’s paradise, combining excellence in academics at the University of Newcastle and Northumberland University, with a vibrant social scene - it’s no wonder students love this city!
