| If you prefer to
get busy with numbered irons rather than the hot and steaming
kind, then head to the golf courses in and around the
Newcastle area.
Whatever your golfing handicap there are golf venues nearby
to suit you, and touring the local courses is a great
way to get familiar with the open spaces in the city and
the beautiful countryside that surrounds it.
Sometimes known as the “Augsta of the North”,
the courses at Slaley Hall [map] are a championship challenge. The two courses, Hunting
and the Priestman, are part of the PGA European Tour and golfers come from across the region to follow in the
footsteps of some of the golfing greats. Both courses
are testing par 4s that make use of the beautiful moorland
for attractive views as well as natural challenges.
Longhirst Golf Club [map] in Morpeth also has a championship course for those who
really want to test their accuracy, but one of the main
reasons to try this course is because it’s “a
taste of Florida in the heart of Northumberland”.
This tree-lined course boasts scenic views and plenty
of water features to enjoy.
Another course in the area for seasoned golfers is the
18-hole links type course at Whitley Bay. Formed
in 1890, the Whitley Bay Golf Club began life as
a 9-hole course that was only used in winter, but today
it is a dedicated golfing venue. Whitley Bay is around
ten miles away from Newcastle towards the North East coast,
and this golf course makes the most of its location with
some great views across the sea.
For options a little closer to the city centre you could
try Newcastle United [map],
the golf club with the same name as the city’s football
franchise (but the golf club had it first!). Visitors
should bear in mind that at weekends they will need to
play their rounds with a member.
There’s also Gosforth Golf Club [map] to the north of Newcastle, which recently established
equal membership for men and women, and City of Newcastle
Golf Club [map],
also in Gosforth, which has no restrictions on visitors
but you should call before turning up.
