GO Gay Bars in Newcastle

Gay Bars in Newcastle Newcastle has a thriving gay scene that attracts pink thinking people from all walks of life and from all corners of the region. So forget the rumours that the North East is the ‘least gay place in England and Wales’ and enter the area’s gay hub.

The city’s gay scene is centred around what is known as the ‘pink triangle’ or the ‘gay village’, not far from Central Station. Scotswood Road is where most of the gay bars are situated and is the closest you’ll come to a North East version of Canal Street.

If you start your adventure into the pink triangle at the bottom end, you’ll come to Rockies bar [map]which is believed to be the oldest gay haunt on the local scene. This colourful and cheeky venue combines male stripper nights, karaoke and participatory pole dancing to generate its lively atmosphere.

The next venue you’ll come to is The Eagle [map], which is becoming particularly popular on the scene for its leather, denim and uniform policy. Although you couldn’t class this as a hardcore venue it does provide a unique experience for Newcastle’s pink triangle. The bar itself is spread over three levels with the basement bar being reserved for ‘men only’.

For a friendly atmosphere you could try The Bank Bar [map] or Twist [map]. The Bank Bar is the smaller of the two but both have coffee action by day and fun dance floor action by night.

Virtually next door to each other are Switch [map] and Heavens Above [map] that both seem to attract a high proportion of women and students. The more posh of the two is probably Switch with its trendy décor and loud music, but Heaven’s Above has its own entertainments to entice you in such as karaoke and Transvestite night on a Wednesday.

It is virtually inevitable that at the end of any night in the pink triangle you will end up at the Powerhouse [map] . The action here covers two floors, with plenty of bars to keep you well watered while making your moves on the dance floors. But there’s also a ‘chill out’ section if you want a break from the mainstream music. This is the best-known gay club in the North East and Newcastle’s only exclusive one, so you can expect it to be popular and packed with young and old from both sides of the gender coin.
