| Newcastle’s
biggest sporting landmark is undoubtedly the newly renovated
stadium at St James’ Park, but across the water
in Gateshead there’s world class sporting facilities
for a variety of sports at the Gateshead International
Stadium [map].
This particular sporting venue is probably best known
for athletics, as it is one of the top
venues for the multi-faceted sport in the UK. The stadium
hosts a number of top athletics events that attract the
best of British talent as well as athletes from around
the world.
The stadium is also home to Gateshead Harriers,
one of the leading athletics teams in the North East.
Founded in 1904 as a running club, they now cater for
all disciplines and have produced their fair share of
top athletes, including its current president Brendan
Foster (1500m, 5000m, 10000m), Jonathan Edwards (Triple
Jump) and Steve Cram (middle distance).
However athletics is not the only sport at Gateshead International
Stadium. As a world-class venue, the stadium is also used
for international rugby league and rugby union matches
as well.
Several other sports clubs have also adopted the multipurpose
venue as their home, namely the rugby league side Gateshead
Thunder, and Gateshead FC, who play in the
Unibond League. In addition there’s Gateshead
International Stadium Netball Club, Gateshead Hockey
Club, Gateshead Victoria Amateur Boxing Club and Gateshead Power Lifting Club.
If you want to participate in any of these sports, or
if you want to watch one of the international events,
getting to Gateshead International Stadium is pretty straightforward
as it's just a ten-minute walk from Gateshead Stadium
Metro Station [map] on Neilson Road.
