Football in Newcastle |
 |
 |
Although football
is the UK’s main sport, Newcastle really hits home
the point, with football ranking close to food as a vital
ingredient to Geordie life.
The Geordie team of choice is Newcastle United and the fans love to see their team in action at St
James’ Park [map].
The club is the biggest in the North East, and has one
of the best attendance records in the football league
as supporters turn out every match day to watch their
team come hell or high water.
Close by is Sunderland FC [map],
Newcastle’s main rivals. Although they haven’t
had the continued success of the Tyneside club, they have
spent many years competing for the top spot alongside
their rivals in the Premiership.
The other major team in the North East is Middlesbrough
FC [map],
who could also be considered as Newcastle’s rivals.
Located further down the North East coast in Teeside,
this club had had a completely empty trophy cabinet for
over 120 years until the 03/04 season when they won the
Carling Cup.
If you’d rather work your own magic on the pitch,
there are a number of pitches in and around Newcastle
where you can play. Many of the local leisure centres
have 5- and 7-a-side pitches that can be booked by members
of the of the public, including Cowgate Leisure Centre
[map], Lightfoot Centre [map] and Scotswood Leisure Centre [map],
with outdoor pitches available at Newburn Leisure Centre[map]. |
