Dance in Newcastle |
 |
 |
Although dance is somewhat of a minority cultural activity,
it still has an important part to play in the landscape
of Newcastle's entertainments.
In 2004, Newcastle and the surrounding areas played host
to a variety of dance productions, from the flailing feet
of Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, to the elegance
of the Ballet Spectacular, to the vibrancy of American
contemporary dance from Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance
Company.
Although there are no venues dedicated exclusively to
dance, many venues in and around the city include dance
as part of their programme of productions, so do take
advantage of our guide to see what’s on at the moment.
The Theatre Royal [map] in the heart of the city centre is probably your best
bet for catching dance in Newcastle, as the venue is also
a member of The Dance Consortium, a UK initiative
that aims to present a world-class international dance
programme. In addition, their eclectic mix of entertainments
can easily accommodate professional dance productions
and regularly does.
As well as professional company shows, some local venues
also host performances by the local dance schools. You’re
likely to catch these at the People’s Theatre
[map] in Heaton, Customs House [map] in South Shields and Whitley Bay Playhouse [map].
If you fancy putting on your own dancing shoes for a highland
fling or a fandango, then why not get to one of the dance
schools in your area.
