Clubbing In Newcastle |
 |
 |
One of the most used words to describe a night out clubbing
in Newcastle is ‘legendary’, so why not get
out there and experience it for yourself in true Geordie
style.
As the biggest club in the area, Ikon [map],
is often on the tip of party-goers tongues when planning
a night out. There’s bars, there’s lasers,
there’s a balcony but most importantly it has huge
dance floor where you can strut, shimmy and show off with
over 2,000 other clubbers. The music varies from night
to night with Thursday’s R‘n’B LoveDough
night and weekends being the most popular. But foam nights
and guest appearances also feature on the events list
of Ikon. This is one of the most popular clubs in the
city, especially at weekends, so be prepared to queue
alongside the notoriously scantily clad northern lasses.
For one of Newcastle’s most famous club nights head
to Foundation [map] on a Saturday night to experience Shindig. The
club night itself has been going since 1991, but since
it came to Foundation it has regularly packed out the
1300+ capacity club with dedicated clubbers. Shindig also
attracts internationally renowned DJs like Tim Deluxe
and Roger Sanchez.
Foundation does have other nights which veer from the
mainstream offerings elsewhere in town, with Disco Noir
for techno loving shape throwers and Stone Love for swaggering
indie kids.
Banging out the best in house grooves and R‘n’B
flavas is Newcastle’s newest dance den, The Attic
[map] . With three floors in the heart of the city centre
there’s plenty of opportunity to get your dance
floor freak on at this stylish late bar and club. This
club also has decent disabled access and disabled toilets
on each floor.
For an alternative to The Attic, try the Quayside chic
of Sea [map].
Housed in an old fish market, you’ll find plenty
of soul amidst the variety of tunes on the turntables,
as R’n’B, disco and funky house all make the
playlist. Patrons of this club tend to be footballers
and stylish young things who wouldn’t feel out of
place at some of London’s trendier clubs.
But if you really want to get down with the funk soul
brothers and sisters in Newcastle, The World Headquarters
[map] is the place to get hip to the groove. With events
on Thursday through to Saturday nights, you’ll find
60’s soul, hip hop, garage, and drum ‘n’
bass all draw clubbers to this funked out, uber-cool venue.
The nemesis of cool, is cheesy and the Baja Beach Club
[map] is Newcastle’s king of corny nights out. Adorned
with plastic fish, bikini-clad barmaids and a huge shark
suspended from the ceiling, the beach theme makes for
a lively night. But it’s the music, which draws
from classic cheesy tunes, that completes the package
and makes this club incredibly popular.
If your night out clubbing isn’t complete without
scantily clad dancing girls, but you can’t stand
fake fish, then head to Sam Jack’s [map],
where you’ll find bar dancing and bargain drinks
with a ‘Coyote Ugly’ theme.
Unfortunately the water based club Tuxedo Princess
[map] doesn’t have a sailor theme, but what it lacks
in uniforms it makes up for in novelty. Firstly this club
is housed on a converted ferry docked under the Tyne Bridge,
secondly it has a rotating dance floor, which should be
tried at least once during your stay in Newcastle, and
thirdly it has up to seven rooms of fun including a karaoke
lounge.
On your Newcastle night on the town you could end up at
one of these venues or one of the many others in the city,
but wherever you go, the city promises a top night out!
