If
you're planning a leisurely trip outside Newcastle's city
centre, then the local bus network should help you get
where you want to go.
To discover the sights around Newcastle, the city buses
will be the most useful option. These go from stops about
a hundred yards from Eldon Street shopping mall [map] in the heart of the city centre.
But for trips further afield to other places of interest
in the region, head for Haymarket bus station [map] on Percy Street. The local Northumbrian Line buses leave from here, going to England's northernmost town
Berwick-on-Tweed as well as other destinations across
the North East.
Travelling on the buses can take you to Whitley Bay, Gateshead,
the Metro Centre, Tynemouth and the Sealife Centre to
name just a few. But you can also use the bus network
to link to other forms of transport that will take you
beyond the UK. There is a bus service from Eldon Square to Newcastle International Airport [map] that runs every 30 minutes during the day with services
running less frequently into the evening. Services also
run to North Shields where you can then take the
ferry to destinations in Northern Europe.
Tickets for these services can be bought when you get
on the bus, just tell the driver your destination and
then pay him or her directly. However there are other
tickets available that could be better value for money,
especially if you are planning a few journeys. For regional
travel there's the Go and Save bus card which should
save you money. While if you plan to combine bus travel
with a few trips on the Metro then the MetroDaySaver could be a good option as it provides unlimited travel
at off-peak times on the Metro and the buses. You can
find out which ticket is best for you at one of the Metro
stations or at the Nexus Travel Shops that can
be found across the city.
For travel to cities within the UK then the National
Express coach network is probably your best bet. They
have services to all the major destinations in the UK
including Wales, Scotland and parts of Ireland, although
they are not all directly connected from Newcastle.
Tickets for coach travel should be bought in advance to
ensure availability although if you are flexible they
can be purchased on the day of travel. Discount
tickets are available for students and senior
citizens and there are sometimes offers available for
travellers who are not eligible for concessions.
The coach station is located at Gallowgate coach station
[map] opposite the city's football ground. The station
also doubles as St James Metro station so you should
find it quite easy to find whatever mode of transport
you decide to take to get there. This is also where you
can find bus timetables for all the buses that service
Newcastle and the surrounding areas. |
