Gay Bars in Manchester |
 |
 |
Manchester has
a very lively and energetic gay community so it’s
no wonder the dynamic Gay Village in the heart
of the city centre is one of the largest of its kind in
Europe.
Manchester's Gay Village is just a few minutes walk from
Piccadilly Gardens, centred in and around Chorlton Street
and Canal Street. Here you’ll find an array of great
pubs, trendy bars and swanky nightclubs that have helped
to give the village a cosmopolitan and continental ambience.
If you’re looking for a place to feel relaxed and
strut your funky stuff then get down to the undoubtedly
camp Hollywood Showbar [map] on Bloom Street. This hugely popular bar is adorned with
classic photos and pictures of iconic Hollywood stars
and has something going on seven nights a week.
At the Showbar, Mondays are men-only while Tuesdays are
for women and Wednesdays play host to an evening for transvestites
and transsexuals. On Thursdays there’s an extravagant
cabaret night while the weekends offer more traditional
disco clubs nights.
If camp American-themed bars are your thing then also
try New York, New York [map],
a hugely popular bar and nightclub on Bloom Street. There
are two floors with a mixed bar downstairs and a men-only
club upstairs that is open ‘til late all week, and
both play a variety of 70s, 80s and current pop music.
If chilled out café-bars are more your style, check
out Manto [map],
which has a spacious bar area, funky lighting and lemon
décor. There's also plenty of balcony and street
tables, a good range of bar snacks, and loud pop and house
music.
Also worth a visit is Metz [map] on Brazil Street, which has an outdoor eating and drinking
area shaped like a boat. The interior is all wooden tables
and chairs, subtle colours on the walls and large mirrors,
making it the perfect place to start you evening out.
One of Manchester’s first gay bar-cum-clubs, Cruz
101 [map] on Princess Street, has maintained its classic camp quality
and remains very popular today. With its glossy, art-deco
look, Cruz’ biggest night of the week is Monday,
when disco divas hit the dance floor to a selection of
70s favourites, funk and soul.
To catch a glimpse of a truly funky gay bar go to Velvet [map] on the famous Canal Street, where you have to enter by
walking down steps containing goldfish tanks! Once inside
there is a bustling yet intimate atmosphere which has
made this bar a hit with the city’s loyal, mixed
gay and straight crowd.
For a somewhat quieter night out then visit Paddy’s
Goose on Bloom Street, a traditional gay pub
serving real ale and bottled beers.
This is the place to be if you want to talk the night
away and best avoided if you're just on the pull.
To finish off a great night in style, the Gay Village
also has a variety of hip and happening nightclubs to
choose from, including the legendary Essential
[map] on Bloom Street.
Why not sample life at the Paradise Factory [map] on Princess Street, which is strictly for everyone –
gay or straight, student or professional.
It has three floors, each offering a different selection
of music, from trance to house to pumping tempo.
Another hugely popular club is Berlin [map],
a sister venue to the well known Prague V [map] bar, which offers the same ‘straights welcome’
door policy as the bar. The music policy is more student-orientated
during the week but at weekends it is UK garage and uplifting
house, when it can get so busy that the party spills out
into Prague 5 itself.
