Manchester has a fantastic mix of cultures all blended together
to make the city one of the most diverse in the world. So it’s
no surprise that you can enjoy a variety of great foods from around
the globe right here in the North West’s number one city.
Everything from African to Indian and Greek to Mongolian is on the
menu in Manchester, so here’s the low down on the best places
to go if you want to try something a little different.
With Manchester being home to the world’s third largest Chinatown,
behind San Francisco and Vancouver, we should mention first the
Far Eastern cuisine on offer here.
First up is Chinatown’s stalwart restaurant, Pearl City
[map],
with its distinctive neon-lit entrance in heart of the city centre.
It has a varied menu that is quite Western-friendly for those who
may not have tried Chinese before, although it hangs on to its authenticity
with its range of traditional Cantonese dishes.
For a taste of the Orient at an internationally renowned eatery,
book a table at Yang Sing [map]
on Princess Street on the outskirts of Chinatown. The menu combines
wonderful dim sum, imaginative signature dishes and classic banquets
that suit everyone from first-timers to Chinese cuisine lovers.
Also in Chinatown you’ll find a choice of Thai restaurants,
including Pacific [map],
which is located right in the heart of the action on George Street.
Winner of several local awards, the restaurant is split into
two levels, Thai on the upper floor and Chinese on the lower. Both
have their own kitchens, waiting staff and chefs. There is a diverse
range of Thai and Chinese foods to choose from, while vegetarians
are well catered for here because 30% of the menu is meat free.
Manchester is as renowned for its Indian food as it is for its Chinese,
so our next stop on the tour of the city’s global cuisine
is the famous Curry Mile [map]
in Rusholme.
Among the Curry Mile eateries is Al Bilal, which offers a range
of sizzling Indian cuisine in a relaxed, informal and lively atmosphere.
Back in the city centre you’ll find a great choice of African,
Korean and Greek eateries, all putting their own unique mark on
this wonderfully diverse city.
Jowata [map]
on Deansgate offers authentic African cuisine and covers
everything from light snacks to full meals, traditional wines to
exotic fruit juices and cocktails.
If you’re after a taste of the Far East then head for the
family-run Koreana restaurant [map]
on King Street West, which is considered to serve the best Korean
cuisine in the country.
For Greek cuisine then try Dimitri’s Tapas Bar Tavern [map],
just off Deansgate, which offers authentic food, a great bar and
live jazz music.
If all that has whet your appetite there’s a lot more to come
from Turkey, Mexico and Mongolia!
Café Istanbul [map]
is a sophisticated and continental Turkish oasis in the heart of
the city centre, which offers authentic meals, classic kebabs and
a large selection of seafood. It is hugely popular with the local
business community and has also been recommended by the Good
Food Guide.
For a unique Asian experience then get along to the Mongolian
Barbeque [map]
on Chorlton Street, which offers a taste of Mongolia using cooking
practices from the times of Genghis Khan. It has a relaxed atmosphere
as guests basically grab a bowl and help themselves to the selection
of meats, fish and vegetables, then choose the spices before finally
having it stir-fried by the chef.
There are plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from in the surrounding
districts, including a chain of the renowned Chiquitos [map]
at Salford Quays. But in the heart of the city centre one Mexican
restaurant stands alone, El Macho Cantinas on Portland Street,
which offers a great choice of seafood and vegetarian dishes, along
with the usual fajitas and burritos.
So, whatever international cuisine you fancy, you’ll probably
find a restaurant that serves it in Manchester!
