Bars in Manchester |
 |
 |
If you’re
looking for a great night out then Manchester will not
disappoint, with its array of hip hangouts and old fashioned
pubs. From swanky bars to quiet little backstreet pubs
and student hangouts, this city has all the ingredients
for a great evening out whatever your social scene.
To mix with Manchester's trendiest folk – and even
bump into a few celebrities – head straight for Deansgate Locks, where the city's sexiest bars
are huddled together by the canal.
Here you'll find the glam Sugar Lounge, a favourite
with Coronation Street stars and Premiership footballers,
which has two bars and a wacky ‘tunnel’ seating
area. Another ultra-trendy venue on the Locks is Baa
Bar [map],
which has mirrors on each wall for the clientele to make
sure their designer labels are still hanging out. Add
to this the Fat Cat Café Bar with its ship-shaped
upper deck and the ever popular Loaf bar, and you’ve
got the recipe for a night of cocktail-sipping, hip-swinging
fun and frolicks.
If on the other hand you fancy a night out in trendy bars
without the designer labels and air kisses, then head
for Deansgate or St Peter’s
Square, where you’ll find a range of well-known
bars. Here the atmosphere is a little more relaxed, where
DJs play mainstream music and drinkers are not afraid
to hit the dance floor.
Close to the new Great Northern complex there's a cluster
of hip bars, including Bar 38 [map], The Square [map] and Brannigans [map],
which all offer great chart music, cocktails and friendly
service.
For a taste of Australia without stepping outside Manchester's
trendy bar scene try Walkabout [map] just off Deansgate, which offers sports, music, good beer
and great tucker – including crocodile tail and
kangaroo.
On St Peter's Square you'll find more cool bars including
the very popular vodka bar Revolution [map] , where you can choose many different flavoured vodka,
from chocolate to chilli! Its new sister is located on
the highly fashionable Deansgate Locks but that’s
not affected the appeal of the original.
If traditional English pubs are more your style then you
won't be disappointed as there are many to choose from
in Manchester. For starters why not visit the Old Grapes
[map] located next to the Opera House theatre on Quay Street,
which is popular with tourists, shoppers and media types.
It's pretty on the outside and has all the hallmarks of
an old fashioned pub on the inside, but has the added
appeal of being part owned by Liz Dawn, who plays Vera
Duckworth in Coronation Street.
For a truly old Manchester pub then head to the Old
Wellington Inn [map],
which was built in 1552 and still retains its Tudor charm
with wooden benches and stone floors.
Other pubs and bars worth visiting if you get the chance
are the Rain Bar [map],
the Pig and Porcupine [map] and Sinclair’s Oyster Bar [map].
Located close to St Peter’s Square, The Rain Bar
is a modern pub built in designer greys and browns to
reflect the rainy city. Sinclair’s Oyster Bar on
Catherdral Gardens is a pub and restaurant rolled into
one, with a fine menu that includes 12 oysters served
with a touch of lemon. Finally the Pig and Porcupine on
Deansgate is a regular haunt of the Coronation Street
cast due to its close proximity to Granada Studios. Its
lunchtime menu and usual selection of ales along with
an excellent wine list have also made it hugely popular
with local businesspeople and office workers.
Whether you’re looking for a pub lunch or a night
out at some of trendiest bars in the country, Manchester
can cater for your needs. And if you want to comment on
