If it’s art you’re after then you won’t
be disappointed in Manchester as the city is packed
to bursting with art galleries, many of which you can
enjoy for free.
First of all why not take a peek at the L.S. Lowry
collection and works by contemporary artists from
the North West at the spectacular galleries at The
Lowry [map] on Salford Quays. Here you can also enjoy the revolutionary
interactive Artworks exhibition, which allows visitors
to explore their creative side in visuals, sound, music,
movement and words.
The Cornerhouse [map] on Oxford Street, is another Manchester gallery that allows
you to enjoy a variety of art forms. It is home to a number
of galleries where you can marvel at the exhibitions,
which showcase contemporary art, sculpture and photography,
as well as visit the international cinema where you can
watch the very best in independent films at one of the
three screens.
If traditional art galleries are more your style then
visit the Manchester Art Gallery [map] on Mosley Street, which has reopened after a £35
million renovation. The gallery has doubled in size and
now displays a permanent collection, which includes Henry
Moore’s Mother and Child and works by Dante Gabriel
Rossetti, Gainsborough and Lucien Freud.
To catch a glimpse of the internationally famous collections
of British watercolours, textiles and wallpapers, then
get along to the Whitworth Art Gallery [map] on Oxford Road. Situated close to Manchester University,
the gallery also has an impressive range of modern and
historic prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures.
Being home to the world’s third largest Chinatown behind San Francisco and Vancouver, Manchester would not
be complete without the Chinese Arts Centre [map].
The centre offers changing contemporary art exhibitions,
workshops and information on Chinese art and culture.
If you’re fascinated by architecture then visit CUBE [map] – Centre for the Understanding of the Built Environment
– an award-winning venue for architecture
and design.
For a taste of classic art mixed with 21st century technology
then head to the Peak Art Cybercafe on Market
Street. It’s an Internet café and local
art gallery rolled into one, so you can marvel at the
work of Manchester artists while checking your email
and enjoying a great cup of tea. The gallery’s
range of community and arts events, including performance
poetry, art workshops and talks by local artists, are
also a hit with tourists.
Other local venues that you may not expect to find great
art include, the Manchester Metropolitan University
Art Gallery with its delightful visual art and design
exhibitions reflecting a range of the faculty’s
academic programmes, the University of Salford’s Chapman Gallery, and The Green Room [map], which although it is better known as a theatre, also has
temporary exhibitions of local artists work, including
paintings, drawings and photography.
For more contemporary art, try the artist-run Castlefield
Gallery [map] off Deansgate and the Colin Jellicoe Gallery [map] on Portland Street which could be well worth a visit.
While away from the city centre you can also pop into
the Viewpoint Photography Gallery [map] in Salford, where you can be mesmerised by a wonderful
collection of colour and black and white prints.
