| If you’re
a keen golfer then make the most of your trip to Liverpool
by heading to one of the Championship golf courses in
and around the city.
For starters there’s the Royal Liverpool [map] at Hoylake on the Wirral, which will play host to the British Open in 2006.
Or if you don’t mind venturing a little further
out of town, try Formby Golf Club [map],
where the 2004 Curtis Cup, a match between the best
women amateurs of the USA and Great Britain, was played.
There is also Formby Hall Golf Club [map],
which was only established in 1996, but in 1999 the PGA
chose it as the venue for the European Challenge Tour
for 1999-2001.
If you just fancy a spare-of-the-moment round of golf,
then head to Bootle Golf Course [map],
which is a public, pay-as-you-play course and home to
Bootle Golf Club.
The longest nine-hole course in the country can be found
at Aintree Racecourse, with the opportunity to drive
a ball over Bechers Brook. The Aintree Golf Centre
[map] also has a driving range.
There are also two municipal golf courses within the city
of Liverpool’s boundaries – Allerton Golf
Course [map] on Allerton Road and Liverpool Municipal Golf Club [map] on Ingoe Lane.
Allerton has a challenging 18 and nine-hole course set
in beautiful woodlands, while Liverpool Municipal is set
on the Liverpool-Knowsley border within 200 yards of the
M57 and is a long but testing course of 6,361 yards.
Other private clubs in Liverpool include Childwall
[map], Lee Park [map], West Derby [map], Woolton [map] and Bowring Park [map].
In fact there are so many places to play golf in and
around Liverpool that its neighbour, the seaside town
of Southport, is even marketing itself as ‘England's
