you’re tired of the usual foods restaurants have
to offer then why not make the most of your trip to
Liverpool by heading to one the many eateries that offer
something a little different.
You can find everything from Vietnamese and Thai, to
Portuguese and Greek in this city, so without further
ado here's some suggestions for some restaurants with
a difference.
For starters you could try a little Spanish tapas at La
Tasca [map],
which is situated opposite the impressive Marriot City
Centre Hotel on Queen Square. With seating outside and
in, you can either soak up the Liverpudlian atmosphere
or enjoy the Spanish interior complete with authentic
music. The menu includes a delicious selection of tapas
and paellas, and you can wash it all down with a glass
of traditional sangria.
If you’re looking for a restaurant where fun and
games are also on the menu, then why not try one of the
city’s Greek eateries, where you can enjoy great
food and then go plate smashing!
Located in the arty Lark Lane area, Akis Taverna [map] gives the feeling of a Mediterranean summer all year round.
In traditional Greek style, this restaurant is bright,
busy, loud and full of party spirit, while the menu includes
a good choice of fresh seafood and wonderful lamb dishes.
Vegetarians are also catered for.
Another exciting Greek restaurant worth trying is The
Kebab House [map] on Hardman Street in the city centre, which encourages
plate smashing and belly dancing after a meal. The Greek
décor gives the place a traditional atmosphere
that is cosy and accommodating – it’s a lot
like being on holiday really.
For a taste of the Orient why not head to one of the city’s
Thai restaurants such as The Siam Garden [map] on Smithdown Road near the Penny Lane area. Here you’ll
find staff serving a selection of banquets in traditional
Thai costume, while all the dishes are prepared by genuine
South East Asian chefs.
If you’re feeling more adventurous you could always
opt for Vietnamese at the popular Fung Lok [map] restaurant, which is also close to the Penny Lane district.
Serving an adventurous menu including starters like; pureed
prawns on sugar cane, and main courses including Vietnamese-style
battered chicken in chilli and garlic, this eatery is
a big hit with locals, businesspeople and tourists.
Liverpool is also home to The Algarve [map] – a well-known Portuguese restaurant in centrally
located Stanley Street. This intimate restaurant is so
cosy and small you may feel like you’ve wandered
into someone’s living room by mistake, but it offers
wonderful cuisine, particularly seafood.
The city also has a good selection of Indian restaurants
such as Shah’s City Balti House [map] and Asha [map].
But in addition Liverpool is also home to one of Europe’s
oldest Chinatowns, based around Berry Street, which has
restaurants including Far East [map] and the Mayflower [map].
Finally, for American grub why not head to the cool Eddie
Rocket’s City Diner on Bold Street [map],
which is a 1950s style American diner complete with ‘Happy
Days’ décor, rock ‘n’ roll music,
and the longest hot dog in Liverpool on the menu.
