If you fancy being entertained by some of the best dancers
in the business or want to learn a few steps for yourself,
then visit one of the many dance theatres and workshops
in Liverpool. For everything from classical ballet to contemporary dance get along to the city’s main Empire Theatre [map], a regular tour stop for the English National Ballet. The Unity Theatre [map] on Hope Place is also another favourite for dance performances, hosting shows by local, national and international dance companies. But if you’d rather put on your dancing shoes and have a go yourself than watch someone else strut their stuff, fear not Liverpool has an array of dance schools to choose from. If it’s a bit of hip-swinging salsa you’re after then head straight to Havana [map] on North John Street, which hosts authentic Cuban salsa lessons downstairs. Salsaroja Cuban Salsa is pure Cuban style salsa and La Rueda taught by The Latin Experience team, and it’s fun for all whether you’re a first timer or a pro. Liverpool also offers you the chance to attempt at bit of belly dancing thanks to classes run by renowned dancer Ishtar. The professional performance artist, who has worked with famous dancers, musicians and filmmakers, holds classes throughout the North West, including the New Brighton area of Merseyside. For a bit of Morris Dancing – to either to watch or take part – the Mersey Morris Men perform throughout the county, including at festivals in Liverpool city centre. Just as tradition dictates, the dances are performed exclusively by men and their costume consists of white shirts and black breeches with flower-decked hats. If you fancy trying a bit of traditional dancing from over the border in Scotland, then the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is your best bet. Adult classes are held weekly in the Wavertree Garden suburb of the city and are split into two categories, 'Basics' and 'General'. There is also plenty of opportunity to have a go at Line Dancing in Liverpool, with lessons in the Wirral, Hoylake and Moreton areas of the city. To try your hand at ballet, tap, ballroom, Latin or jazz, try the Loretta Legge School of Theatre, Dance and Drama [map], Martins Dance Centre [map] or the Liverpool Theatre School [map]. Liverpool now also plays host to the Merseyside Dance Initiative [map] (MDI), which is a partner of Dance Northwest, a recognised national dance agency. MDI aims to develop dance throughout Merseyside by working with local artists, promoters, venues, schools and other dance agencies to create, deliver and support dance.
