If you’re
planning a visit to London don’t forget to bring
your credit cards as they’re sure to take a real
bashing with the wide selection of shops and markets on
offer. From world famous department stores to tiny antique
shops you’ll find shopping heaven around every corner. Start your expedition in South West London which is the home of high class shopping. From Knightsbridge [map] to Chelsea [map] and the famous King’s Road [map], you’ll find a range of excellent shops to satisfy your every need. For unusual gift ideas and independent retailers offering goods that you just won’t find anywhere else head to Covent Garden [map] and Holborn [map]. This is perfect for a weekend stroll where you can enjoy a leisurely walk around the vegetable market, find a pavement café and plan your military assault on the shops and your credit card. Central London offers the eclectic mix of high fashion and independent retailers in Covent Garden and an array of city central markets and collector’s fairs. Covent Garden [map] is a really European shopping district and its market offers an eclectic mix of quintessentially English goods. Catch some of the areas best street entertainers and buskers in the piazza. If you’re looking for everything under one roof try Smith of Smithfields [map]. Covering several floors of a renovated Grade II listed meatpacking warehouse, this building is located at Charterhouse Street, and provides a great place to eat, drink, and purchase a range of household objects. Try a romantic alternative to the busy streets by checking out the London Silver Vaults [map], hidden away behind large safe doors at Chancery House on Chancery Lane, WC2. With a massive range of silverware it’s difficult to choose so it’s good to know that staff are on hand to assist. Soho [map], on the other hand, offers a distinctly different shopping experience. Those looking for adult and alternative shops should find a good range of bargains here that are sure to spice up your life. Carnaby Street [map] is close by in W1 and is a great place to experience the very fashionable of London going about their daily business. The west of London is where you’ll find the famous Regent Street [map] which offers a range of flagship stores including Berketex and Nikeworld or take the kids to the world-famous Hamley’s Toy Store which is seven floors of goodies for the young and young at heart. Home to the most elegant and expensive shops in London Bond Street [map] is heaven to many keen shoppers who enjoy rushing between Gucci and Versace. Notting Hill [map] is where you’ll find unusual gifts. Choose from ethnic food halls, antique warehouses, or bookshops that inspired a blockbusting British film. In the North West you’ll find Church Street [map], which is home to the Gallery of Antique Costume and Textiles (GACT) where people in the movie world come for work and pleasure. Directors of period films including Out of Africa and Gladiator come here to ensure they are spot on, while models and actors come to get kitted out. Brent Cross shopping centre [map], Hendon is basically an undercover high street with all the stores and coffee shops you would expect to see in an average town centre all under one roof. However this shopping centre has been voted one of the best in London so it’s well worth a visit. North London is a celebrity hangout; so as you take to the shops of Broadway [map] in Muswell Hill and Crouch End looking for Indian cushion covers or girly accessories, keep an eye out for stars from the small screen. And if you’re feeling adventurous you could make your way to Stroud Green [map] near Crouch End where you’ll find Roxanne (on Stroud Green Road), a store that sells French Connection and Nicole Farhi seconds. Markets dominate East London’s shopping related offerings with more than eight in the area, however the three most well known are; Spitalfields [map], Petticoat Lane and Brick Lane. Although the East End markets cannot be beaten for the spendthrifts and bargain hunters, the area does have plenty of places where you can spend it like Beckham. The South East is the place for family-orientated bargains so head to The Catford Shopping Centre [map], Winslade Way, Catford, SE6. Catford also boasts an indoor market and a number of Turkish bakeries. There’s another mall not too far from Catford called The Lewisham Centre [map], Molesworth Street, SE1, and this is the place for famous name brands and independent retailers selling a range of gifts and accessories.
