When the going
gets tough on your body and it's more than just a very
British bout of influenza or the fact that you had to
run to catch the bus – then London is medically
well equipped to help you out.
In the case of a life-threatening emergency call 999 for
immediate assistance. This number should be used for genuine
emergencies only.
For non-urgent medical enquiries you can call the National
Health Service Direct helpline on 0845 46 47. With a specialist
team answering the phones, NHS Direct can assist you with
a range of medical problems as well as offering treatment
advice and support.
If you need to go to a hospital there are plenty dotted
around London and you shouldn’t have to travel too
far.
We’ve gathered together all of those important numbers
and addresses so that, should the worse happen, you’ll
be able to find a hospital or dentist close to your London
accommodation.

Accident and Emergency Hospitals
If you have an urgent medical problem or are
involved in an accident you – or whoever you are
with – should call 999. It is free to do so and
once paramedics arrive on the scene they will treat you
appropriately.
Sometimes this will involve a visit to an A and E Department
(otherwise known as Accident and Emergency). Unless your
injury or illness is very severe you can expect to wait
before being seen by a doctor or specialist.
This service is free to UK citizens but those travelling
from abroad should get appropriate travel insurance to
cover any medical eventuality.

Dentists – Emergency treatment centres
If your toothache just won’t go away or you have
had an accident and injured any area of your mouth you
might be advised to see an emergency dentist.
Visitors to an emergency dentist should expect to pay
an amount that will probably be covered by your travel
insurance.
Finding a dentist to treat you can be tricky and then
you might not be seen immediately. So if you are planning
a vacation to London for more than a few weeks you’d
be advised to get your teeth checked out at home before
making the journey.
