As well as being
the country’s largest city, Glasgow is now officially
the sporting capital of Scotland after it was voted
the European Capital of Sport in 2003.
With world class facilities such as The National
Badminton Centre [map] at Scotstoun and the stunning 50-metre pool at Tollcross
Park Leisure Centre [map],
the city’s commitment to sport and leisure is
unrivalled in Scotland.
Glasgow also attracts the very best in sporting events
from the UEFA Champions League Final in 2003
to televised international athletics and gymnastics,
and let’s not forget the city's two great mass
participation sporting events – The Great Scottish
Run and the Britannic Asset Management Women's
10K run.
In addition to all this the city is at the forefront
of sports development, running coaching programmes across
a wide range of sports including football, swimming,
badminton and rugby.
If you fancy working up a sweat, trying to lose a few
pounds or just want to get fit during your stay in the
city then why not make the most of the 24 sports
and leisure centres here. Among the facilities on
offer in Glasgow are, fitness classes, swimming pools,
flumes and water features, health suites, sports halls,
tennis courts, badminton courts, running tracks, five-a-side
and seven-a-side pitches and full-sized football pitches.
All sports facilities can be booked on a casual basis
by using a Glasgow Leisurecard, which offers
additional discounts on the cost of most leisure activities.
The Leisurecard will also give you the added benefit
of being able to book by phone or in person at any football
centre, sports centre and swimming pool, up to seven
days in advance.
One of the best leisure centres in Glasgow at the moment
is the Drumchapel Pool [map],
which has a luxurious health suite complete with sauna
and steam room, showers and a relaxation area with a
television. You can also enjoy the range of toning and
cardiovascular equipment designed to give you the look
you've always wanted, or you could try the extensive
fitness class programme, learn to swim classes and women's
evenings.
If all that sounds too energetic, why not just opt for
a dip in the pool, and with a small pool for the children,
you can take the whole family to Drumchapel Pool if
you want to.
