Live Music in Glasgow |
 |
 |
If you’re looking for an evening of live music then
you’ll be spoilt for choice in Glasgow as the city
offers a great mix of rock, pop, jazz, classical and folk
music.
To catch a glimpse of some of the biggest names in the
music industry, get along to the Scottish Exhibition
and Conference Centre [map],
a huge venue spanning 64 acres on the banks of the River
Clyde. With over 22,000 square metres of usable space,
it regularly hosts concerts by acts such as Dido, 50 Cent,
Leann Rimes and McFly.
You can also see rock and pop acts at The Barrowland
[map] on Gallowgate, a legendary ballroom that plays host
to a string of well known acts. The atmosphere is so electric
that many bands choose to play two or three nights here
instead of at a larger concert hall with less character.
Attempting to steal The Barrowland’s limelight is
the Carling Academy [map] on Eglington Street, which opened in 2002 on the south
side of the River Clyde. It too welcomes famous and up-and-coming
rock and pop bands.
For classical music try the impressive Glasgow Royal
Concert Hall [map],
a breathtaking venue that opened in 1990 during the city’s
reign as European Capital of Culture. Here you
can see a range of classical, celtic and jazz musicians
as well as regular performances from the Royal Scottish
National Orchestra.
Also worth a look for classical and contemporary music
productions is the City Hall [map] right in the heart of Glasgow city centre. This Italian-style
building is one of the most impressive concert halls in
the city, with even the great Charles Dickens reading
from his own work here on one occasion. The venue has
an annexe, The Old Fruitmarket, which often caters
for music of a less classical nature.
To see the bands of tomorrow today head along to the famous King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut [map] on St Vincent Street, where Brit pop legends Oasis were
first spotted and signed.
If you want to sample some Scottish folk music then try
the Victoria pub [map] in Bridgegate, a traditional pub by the River Clyde that
was established in 1875. It is situated on one of the
oldest streets in Glasgow and in recent times has become
famous for live folk music sessions almost every night
of the week.
For jazz and classical music in a classy environment head
to the Corinthian [map] on Ingram Street, which even has an exclusive members-only
bar where stars such as actor Ewan McGregor hang out.
Music wise superb pianists create a wonderful atmosphere
on a Saturday night and Sundays are woken up with live
jazz music.
Also good for jazz music is The 13th Note [map] on King Street, a relaxed bar that plays host to regular
jazz and R&B nights in the basement. |
