| Don’t be
fooled into thinking that Glasgow should be forgotten
about in favour of some of Scotland’s more famous
golfing areas.
The city is in fact the ideal base for the complete golfing
holiday as the former European City of Culture not only
has its own top class courses but there are many more
just a short drive away.
One of Glasgow’s best known courses is Haggs
Castle [map],
which has played host to several professional tournaments
in the past and is home to the amateur Cameron Corbett
Vase every July.
Also within the city limits there are two parkland courses
at Cawder [map] – one is hilly with some challenging holes whilst
the other is flat.
Pollock Golf Course [map],
situated in the Pollock Estate, which is also home to
the renowned Burrell Collection art gallery, is another
venue where you can enjoy a round.
If you head north out of the city centre you’ll
find plenty more courses to choose from, including Douglas
Park [map], Milngavie [map] and Hilton Park [map].
For those staying close to the airport there is Renfrew
Golf Course [map],
which is just off the M8 in between Glasgow Airport and
the city centre.
But the cream of the crop in Glasgow is undoubtedly Loch
Lomond [map],
which has won worldwide praise since it first appeared
on TV screens as a tournament venue. Unfortunately play
here is restricted to members and their guests but there
are numerous other good courses to choose from nearby,
such as Helensburgh [map], Cardross [map] and Dumbarton [map].
To the south of Glasgow there are many other courses within
an hour’s drive, including East Renfrewshire
[map], Whitecraigs [map] and East Kilbride [map].
As part of the city council’s Active Glasgow scheme, which aims to get more people participating in
sport in the city, there are a number of golf lessons
available offering expert tuition for young and old.
To encourage more residents and visitors to take up golf,
Glasgow City Council also operates three 18-hole and two
9-hole public golf courses, which are inexpensive and
have no restrictions on who can play.
