Gay Bars in Glasgow |
 |
 |
Glasgow's gay scene
has grown around the trendy bars in the newly redeveloped Merchant City, with the majority of venues being
found in Virginia Street, Wilson Street and Glassford
Street.
One of the most famous gay pubs in the city is Sadie
Frost’s [map],
which is believed to be named after the British actress
in honour of her performance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Situated on West George Street close to the Queen Street
train station, this trendy bar offers great cheesy music
and a women’s only night on Sunday in the Blue Room.
Another popular haunt for the chilled-out gay crowd is Delmonicas [map],
or 'Dels' as it is affectionately known, which is located
in Virginia Street. This place has recently had a redesign
to keep up with the general trend in Merchant City, and
now boasts lots of glass, mirrors and vistas.
Next door you’ll find Moda[map],
a somewhat quieter, more atmospheric meeting place where
you can catch up with your mates or relax with your lover.
There is a mix of straight and gay clientele here.
One of the newest kids on the block is Revolver Bar [map] on John Street, an intimate little basement bunker with
plenty of charm and some great theme nights.
From the newest to the oldest pub on the gay scene, The
Waterloo [map] on Argyle Street mainly attracts older drinkers and the
horde of regulars.
For the ultimate in cool then head to Bar 10 [map] in the heart of Glasgow’s gay scene, where it’s
good to look great. Despite the majority of them being
serious trendsetters, the regulars here are as friendly
and chatty as they are well dressed. Tasty food is served
throughout the day while the pre-club DJs put you in the
mood for partying in the evenings and at weekends. It’s
definitely the place to start a big night out.
Glasgow’s most famous gay club Bennets [map] has been closed since May 2004 when it was severely damaged
by fire. The club is now undergoing major restoration
work but it’s likely that all the old favourites,
such as women only nights, drinks promotions and two floors
of dance and cheesy music, will be back soon.
So at the moment, the choice of gay nightclubs is rather
limited in Glasgow, but luckily the main venue, Polo
Lounge [map] is a cool as ever. Some punters refuse to even step foot
in here because it is ‘pretentious’ but don’t
be fooled by its leather-and-oak gentlemen’s club
décor. Whatever the critics’ say about it
you’re sure to have a good night here as the club
offers a great mix of classic pop music in The Trophy
Room and dance in The Club Room.
