Comedy In Glasgow |

Comedy clubs are quickly establishing themselves as the
ultimate night out because they offer the complete package
of hilarious entertainment, a slap-up meal and a disco
all rolled into one.
And if you’re planning an evening at one of Glasgow’s
funny venues then you won’t be disappointed as the
city has a good selection, all with regular turns from
first rate comedians.
Perhaps the Scottish city’s most well known comedy
club, The Stand [map],
usually has an excellent line up of big names from the
local and national circuit week in, week out. This club
is sister to the one in Edinburgh and was, until fairly
recently, Glasgow's only dedicated spot for laughs.
Hot on the heels of The Stand was Jongleurs [map],
a national chain of comedy clubs that opened its Glasgow
venue in 2002, on the site of a legendary entertainment
venue, the Glasgow Apollo. The club occupies the basement
of the new UGC development and stands next to the UGC
multiplex, one of the tallest cinemas in Europe and the
biggest in Scotland. Facilities here include state-of-the-art
audio-visual equipment, moveable seating tables, a dance
floor and a separate bar. You can also enjoy a nice meal
before the show starts.
Glasgow’s other venue dedicated entirely to making
the punters laugh is The Vault Comedy Club [map],
which is located in the city centre. The impressive building
dates back to 1906 and housed the Glasgow Savings Bank
until it closed seven years ago.
Recently refurbished, it opened its doors again in November
2003 as a comedy club while still retaining many of the
original features, such as the ornate ceiling, mosaic
floor, wood panelling and gold mosaic wall.
Based at the State Bar in Holland Street, the Madcap
Comedy Club [map] has been a popular haunt for those looking for a few laughs
since it first started in the late 1990s. Every Saturday
night and once a month on a Tuesday, the Madcap gang take
over and laughter is the name of the game.
Also worth trying for its comedy shows is King Tut’s
Wah Wah Hut [map] on St Vincent Street, which is where Oasis were first
spotted (and signed). The club is most famous as a venue
for local and well known bands that play here throughout
the week, but the monthly comedy night is always brings
in the crowds too.
