Budget Accommodation in Glasgow |
 |
 |
From cheap and
cheerful guesthouses to members’ only youth hostels,
Glasgow has a good choice of accommodation that doesn’t
cost a fortune. So why not book your room at one of the
city’s budget hotels and save your pennies for the
fascinating sightseeing tours.
If you’re heading to Scotland’s largest city
during the summer months then check out the basic but
very affordable accommodation on offer at the University
of Glasgow [map].
During the student holidays, July to September, the halls
of residence Wolfson Hall and Dalrymple
Hall are opened up to the public to rent on a
short-term basis. They are mostly popular with business
travellers attending conferences at the Scottish Exhibition
and Conference Centre or the university, as the rooms
are situated in the heart of the vibrant West End.
Located one mile from Glasgow city centre, the University
of Strathclyde also offers a wide range of accommodation
to let during the summer holidays.
For tourists who want to keep their costs at an absolute
minimum, one of the city’s hostels may be the best
choice of accommodation.
Glasgow Youth Hostel [map] on Park Terrace is very popular with travellers wanting
to see the sights before moving on to another part of
the country. The accommodation here is in dormitories
– there are 150 beds in total and each room sleeps
four to six people. Guests are free to use the kitchen,
games room, laundry and TV lounge, and there is also Internet
access so you can keep up to date with your emails.
The hostel itself is only a stone’s throw from the
city’s main attractions, and there are plenty of
bars, restaurants and clubs in the vicinity. Conveniently
the reception is open 24 hours, so late arrivals are not
a problem.
Although you must be a member of the Scottish Youth
Hostel Association or an affiliated organisation to
stay here, the Glasgow Backpackers [map] is a little more welcoming for spur-of-the-moment travellers.
Housed in an impressive Georgian terrace, this hostel
is only a five-minute walk from the city centre.
As well as dormitories of various sizes, there are several
twin rooms available for guests who prefer more privacy
and on the whole this hostel is large and airy, with a
warm welcome is guaranteed.
If you’d rather stay in the comfort of a guesthouse
but don’t want to pay out all your savings for the
privilege, fear not there are plenty of budget hotels
in Glasgow.
Situated in a prime West End location, the Kelvingrove
Hotel [map] is highly popular with overseas visitors as the staff
here are multilingual. The majority of the rooms are
equipped with en suite bathrooms and the hotel is close
to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Scottish Exhibition
and Conference Centre and a variety of bars, cafes and
restaurants.
For a more residential setting why not try the Kelvin
Hotel [map],
a two star guesthouse in a leafy terraced street close
to Great Western Road. It is close to all the West End
amenities and there is a regular bus service for those
who want to venture into the city centre. The rooms are
comfortable and clean and nearly half of them have en
suite bathrooms. |
