Theatre In Edinburgh |

 |
Two of Edinburgh’s most prestigious theatres should
be top of anybody’s list when planning a visit to
the city.
The Festival Theatre [map] is home to Scottish ballet and opera and
hosts a wealth of touring productions. The Festival Theatre
has the largest stage in Britain and is a modern
and exciting venue, to match its extensive programme of
the very latest musical and renowned shows. This theatre
really comes alive during the Edinburgh Festival in August when its programmes take on an international
theme.
The Kings Theatre [map] plays host to regular productions from The Royal National
Theatre and other highly regarded touring companies.
This is also the place to catch Edinburgh’s popular annual pantomime and is the place to see up-and-coming local talent as many amateur dramatic societies perform here.
The Festival Theatre is located on Leven Street and The
Kings Theatre is on Nicolson Street.
If you’re looking for a contemporary production,
head to The Traverse Theatre [map],
Cambrige Street. This theatre specialises in brand new
performances from new writers and is a great place to
see emerging talent. There’s also a great café
bar in which to enjoy the surroundings of this imposing
and modern theatre.
Those who prefer more famous productions will find everything
they’re looking for at The Royal Lyceum Theatre
[map] , home to the company of the same name. The Royal
Lyceum has been in the same building on Grindlay Street
since the late 1880’s and has always been a popular
venue in the city. Whether you’re looking for an
evening of Arthur Miller or want a contemporary
thriller you’ll find something appealing on the
diverse programme.
Catch a West End musical or a top band at The
Edinburgh Playhouse [map],
Greenside Place. This venue has some of the best acoustics
in the city and gets all the big names from London and
Broadway as well as a wealth of top pop and rock bands.
If you’re looking for an intimate venue there’s
a range of smaller and amateur theatres dotted around
the main city centre. Some of the best studio spaces include The North Edinburgh Arts Centre theatre [map], Penny
Court, the Bedlam Theatre, Greyfriar’s Bobby,
The Old Town, and Gateway Theatre, Leith Walk.
Here you’ll find touring companies, amateur productions
and student presentations.
