As
you would expect from a capital, Edinburgh has its own international airport, which is little more than
a stones throw from the city centre with excellent transport
links.
The airport itself is off the M9 motorway
with access via the A8 Edinburgh/Glasgow Road just 8 miles to the west of the city. Its location makes
it easy to link up with the country’s main road
network.
Getting to and from the city centre can also be done by taxi or by public transport. Taxis from
the airport are available from the main forecourt and
will cost approximately £12. The alternative would
be to use the regular bus service run by Lothian Regional
Transport although the service is limited in the early
mornings and late evenings. Airport/city centre buses
(bus no. 100) run every 10-15 minutes and take you from
the main terminal to St Andrew’s Square, Waverly
Bridge or Haymarket train station. The journey takes around
25 minutes.
Built in 1977 the airport has recently had a £100
million makeover and now further work is taking place
which should make flying to and from Edinburgh a straightforward
experience.
Once at the airport you can jet off with one of 30 airlines
to destinations across the UK, Europe and beyond.
Direct links from Edinburgh to far-flung destinations
such as Africa, Asia and the USA are pretty non-existent
as Scotland’s main long haul airport is Glasgow
International Airport, between 1 – 1.5 hours away.
If your heart is set on an exotic destination far away
then you could also try going via London which is well
connected in terms of flights with around 30 a day to
London’s five airports or consider travelling by
train which (if all goes well) is 4 hours from the city
centre.
