GO Kids & Families in Cambridge

Family Days Out in Cambridge That cry of “I’m bored!” should vanish from the lips of your offspring if you choose to take a break in Cambridge during the school holidays.

Kids are given free-range to have fun at The Cambridge and County Folk Museum [map] which brings the vivid life of Cambridge’s inhabitants to the fore. Visitors can trace a fascinating history through a series of exhibitions that focus on toys, industry, furniture and even kitchen appliances. This is a great museum for children as they can venture around it in safety and complete worksheets to get the most of their visit.

If your children are getting a bit tired of the historical side of the city, why not take them on an Evening Drama Tour? Costumed characters emerge from the shadows around the historical city centre to tell their tales of daring and woe. You never know whom you might meet, Henry VIII might want you to listen to his marital problems or a lowly gravedigger might have a word or two to tell you about the Black Death. This is a really fun way for children to learn about history. The Evening Drama Tour can be booked through the Tourist Information Centre.

Younger children love animals and there’s two locations you could take them to make them smile.

Linton Zoo [map] is set in 16 acres of garden and is home to many beautiful and exotic animals including lions, tigers, zebras, and smaller animals such as owls and marmosets. This zoo is an important breeding ground for endangered species and is also very active in conservation issues.

Another option for animal loving kids is Shepreth Wildlife Park [map]. This sanctuary offers some of the more unusual animals that you won’t find in zoos. Most of the inhabitants are unwanted or mis-treated animals from around the world and include Prairie dogs, wolves and ponies and deer.

The tamer animals can be fed and petted whilst keepers explain about animal welfare. This is a great place to take the whole family, particularly pre-schoolers, who can learn about responsibility and how to take care of animals and pets.
